Ashwagandha

by admin

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herb which comes from a short shrub native in the dry regions of India, Africa, and the Middle East.

It’s uses are noted in an ancient system of medicinal knowledge created from the subcontinents of India known as Ayurvedic medicine.

Translated, Ashwagandha means the “Smell of Horse” with its reference to the roots strong smell and the traditional belief that it brings about the strength of a horse if ingested.

The leaves of Ashwagandha has been used in India for more than 4,000 years and practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine have long prescribed the herb as a means to calm nervous tension, fight against insomnia, and to relieve inflammation.

In the West, it is now known to be an adaptogenic substance, with active compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-stress, and anti-anxiety properties. Research has even shown that it reduces the symptoms of insomnia and even depression.

Recently, in a randomized controlled study of patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee found the extract containing Ashwagandha to be superior to the placebo group for alleviating pain and enhancing functionality.

Ashwagandha has shown to also reduce concentrations of cortisol, a commonly known stress hormone, and improve the function of the immune system.
